PostSubject: Metal vs Leather vs Nothing + extra remarks   Metal vs Leather vs Nothing + extra remarks I_icon_minitimeTue May 12, 2009 12:35 am

Okay, Im the crazy one out of the group wanting to be the one wearing plate armor.

I have some thoughts on different armor types in this game.

Plate: Yes big plates of steel over some leather over a gambeson.

*thought* Wouldnt you have to hit a person in plate harder so they can feel it? I mean think about it. the cushioning and the actual resistance of the plate armor itself makes it a proponent of making it hard to feel hits. SO... does this mean u have to be hit harder to count the hits?

*Oh day dream* I wish Plate gave you 1 extra armor...../drool

Leather: This actually has a couple different types mainly stuck into 2 generic categories of rigidy and softish.

*thought* Its leather and in terms of armor its the same as plate... bugger

Nothing: Self-explanatory

*thought* If your not going to wear armor you might as well run around nekkid. Its better defensively than any armor in the game with exception to arrows.... hell... wear a helmet anyway...

*image*...Dude running around nekkid with nothing but a sword, helmet and shield yelling, "Im the Thunder GOD!!! Beware of the THUNDER FROM DOWN UNDER!!!!" *image end* /begin nightmares....lol

Also,

If i make my armor and i wanted to add in details like designs and such. Can i use Fiberglass or other such materials to add designs and will it still count as armor?

reason for this is because i want to add the Symbolisms and stuff like that to the armor but im special when it comes to actually doing that stuff to armor.

Also, is the chest and back count as separate armor areas?

so do i get 1 extra hit in the back and 1 extra hit in the front or is it a total of 1 for either?

In the handbook they allow metal armor on body and head but not legs and arms, if I'm reading correct. Armor does not count as separate areas. One hit in the back and then in the front is two hits, your dead. (blues)

Plate's hot and heavy, but it does look cool and you can move very well it in.

Alot of Dark age peoples; Norse, Saxon's, celts, did not wear body armor at all because they couldn't afford it. Just like I don't drive a hummer. (I love my jeep though) Not wearing any armor is probably more correct from a historical viewpoint. Some did run around naked and fight like that (Greeks, Bersirkers, Gaul's) but for some reason the bit about running around like the thunder god made me think of Ximali.

I would think you could put any designs on it you wanted in any medium. Hey the more you stand out, the more passerby's will notice.

I just get too confused counting how many times someone hit me. It's probably just easier to not wear armor, then again, there really is nothing like the feel of suiting up and moving around in armor and helmet.

I thought the only place not allowed to be covered in metal was the joints like the knees and elbows...

Yea its only the joints that can't be covered in metal armor. You do have a good point knubs, I have never run into anyone who actually supports the use of metal armor, its bulky and too hot for most to use but no one I know has ever brought up the point that others would have to hit harder. I'm not going to tell you that you're right about it but I see no flaw in your logic considering if you dont know you're hit then you very well cant take the hit.

I can see that causing problems as well with people complaining about me not taking hits.
but the problem would be people not hitting correctly in the first place.

I remember when surt took me aside my first day and told me to hit him as hard as i could I did this 3 or 4 times before he said that works.

If i start to wear more plate ill just have to tell people to hit me harder!

Im looking forward to the sword massages.

Your not the only guy whose crazy dream it is to wear plate to dagorhir. Lol. I have to wait for mine though, because I'm still growing. Mad but oh well. I'll just go in clothes for now

Yeah that would be the only technical advantage, the hit harder thing. For me, i rely mostly on speed so leather is what i am going for. But if you really want that plate then who is to stop you? Suit up, Man!

In Dagorhir rules all armor is the same class and value. Two good solid blows of a blue and one good solid blow of a red or a solid two handed thrust of a green goes through it, irregardless of plate steel or leather. By making people have to hit you harder because you are wearing steel, they may inadvertently start hitting harder period, weather the target is armoured or not. This could cause some problems. Also, forcing to hit harder with the more prevalent cheap blue foam and pvc weapons would undoubtably lead to failure of the weapon sooner than later. Since, by honour, we count our own blows, I would say if you knew the hit to be solid, you should take it, rather than insist they hit you harder because you are wearing steel.

I wore a steel body brace this past Saturday. I could definately hear the 'TINK' when it was struck. So I knew to take the hit or to say 'you hit me on the armour with only one shot of your blue.' But if I can see in your face and body mechanics that you swung with might, then I would take the hit weather I felt only a 'TINK' or a 'THUD'. But of course, tis only my opinion.

I have this reasoning behind the hitting..

a two handed green -- you'll feel the stab. if you don't they need to stab harder.

a two handed red -- you'll feel the swing if they do it correctly. again, if they dont they need to learn.

arrows... well you never feel them even unarmored unless you get head shot.

blues... i need you to hit me... not tap me. If i feel it Ill take it.

Im not trying to sound mean but this is a contact game.

sorry for butting in but you both have some good points, the point is that though wearing plate would be kick ass though at the same time very misleading. i mean steel could only be so thick, if a sword were to hit the thin metal hard enough it dents making it useless any way right? i guess i wouldnt know..never had fight with it...if not, i'd much rather stick to the original rules because its simple. we already know them. just putting my thought in

Your arent going to make dents in it unless your plate is really thin or your pommel butting him. I do believe that if you can hear a tink or thud you should take it because a light hit with a FOAM weapon shouldn't make much of a sound.

And i will... im not going to go out of my way to ignore hits.... that boring

also i doubt the foam is going to dent the steel....

Yeah thats what i was saying, unless you have super thin armor which isn't allowed you wont make dents.

at a ren fair I was at I bought plate metel bracers, very comfortable, if it you were hit you would feel it, very comfy, I will be willing to share, quick question, these bracers have a celtic tri moon symbol on it, much like the biohazard sign, any way, I would like to keep the stickers on but If we have a symbol I would like to put that on, so if we do, let me know
