| this place is seriously awesome. they will even cut the foam into strips any size you want so you don't even have to measure much! cuts a lot of time down when building a sword. | |

| What kind of foam are we looking for? Kurn mentioned it on Sunday but my brain forgot by the time I got home, I remember him saying something like 5 feet X 1 yard width or for $11.00 cut in strips of 1 1/2 inches. So I'm assuming that's a closed cell foam for sword blades. Personally I am looking for some cheaper 2 inch open cell foam that is big enough for shield covering's. I want to make some extra loaner shields but money of course, as with all of us at this time, is an issue.

| It's the 1/2" Volara (maybe Velora?) Foam. It's kinda an off white color, almost a cream.

| I ordered arrow head kits from Edhellen but they are now on backorder I read somewhere that green foam from Joanne's was a good substitute but it is expensive. | |

| IME, Joann's green foam isn't stiff enough. Some people say you can cut it big and precompress it, but it generally isn't the best. After calling the upholstery and craft shops in town, I couldn't find a local source for good arrow foam so I had to order it in.
I have heard from a couple places now that Edhellen's is running behind, have you tried to contact them?
BTW, do you guys usually put open cell on your shields?

| I thought it was mandatory to put open cell on your shields. All mine consists of 1 layer of closed cell against the core (which has been plywood for all my shields) and then 2 inches of open cell over that. On the edge I put 1 layer of closed cell with an inch of open cell and then another layer of closed cell. (I cheated on my first two shields and put fun noodles around the edge, but I don't think that kind of foam holds up so well)
I saw some shields in dag video's on youtube that look pretty thin and saw some being made out of layer's of closed cell foam only. One of our guys had a buckler made out of 3 layer's of closed cell, I believe on a plywood core. I think it depends on the end use of the shield. If it's not layered with open cell, it shouldn't be used for shield bashing.

| I can't speak for your house rules, but Dag rules do not make a distinction between different types of shields. A shield is a shield is a shield. For that reason, all shields are expected to hit like blues, especially the edges. Check out the plywood core round shield tutorial on dagorhir.com: http://www.dagorhir.com/gear/content/weapon_tutorials/hm_shield.phpI would agree with you, fun noodle and pipe foam break down waaaaaaaaaaay too fast for what we do. | |

| Just to make the distinction. Shields are not expected to hit like blues. 'Edgeing' someone with a shield, while being a good tactic in battle is a little rude. Equate it with hitting someone with the haft padding..on purpose.
It is true that you can make a shield without open cell, in fact most shields are made with only closed cell foam. Shields should be well padded and sturdy. As the bashing rules stand now, you are allowed to bash from the front or side only, and you are only allowed two steps before contact is made.
The general rule of thumb (or wrist...lol) is 'Don't be a douchebag'. Make you kits to standard and don't try to min-max your shit. That's how people get hurt.

Min-max gear breaks down faster and has to be checked more often, no doubt. K'urn, I hope you don't mind me chiming in, if you want me to back off, say it here or PM me and I'll shut up. I come over to your forum here since we are neighbors and I wanted to communicate and be generally helpful, not to get in your face or cause problems. I tell my guys a shield is padded like a blue because blues usually need 3 layers on the blade and that is consistent with what a shield usually needs, not so they will swing it at people As regards bashing, and not to be a contradictory douchebag, but the 2008 MoA states: 4.8. Shield Bashing and Checking 4.8.1. A shield bash means using a shield to strike an opponent starting from a distance more than two steps away. 4.8.2. A shield check means using a shield to strike an opponent starting from a distance two steps away or closer. 4.8.3. Players may shield bash an opponent on their front or side. Bashing an opponent from the rear is prohibited. Bashing an opponent who has lost a leg is prohibited. 4.8.4. Players may shield check an opponent from any direction. Players may shield check opponents who have lost a leg. 4.8.5. It is never permissible to strike a fighter in the head or neck with a shield. So bash from the front/side only, but a bash is more than 2 steps. Check from any side and a check is less than two steps.

| No worries. I appreciate the chiming. Forgive me if I came across a little chaffing. Troubles are tough right now and I'm stressing badly. It actually does my heart good to know someone else will be looking out for the guys when I'm gone.

| I read about what you're dealing with and my heart goes out to you. I hope things come together quickly.
On the dag side, I am really looking forward to sparring with you guys soon. It's nice to have another group pretty close.
