PostSubject: Spear grip, lefthand or right?   Fri Jul 10, 2009 7:07 am

Which hand is better to the front? I'm a fencer so I think I put my right arm forward. I am right handed and I lead stronger from the right side when I move and thrust with the spear, but am I at a disadvantage? The left hand has to bring the shaft up when I have to defend with it, and being the weaker hand, it doesn't move quick enough or strong enough.

I see most spearmen lead with the left hand/foot forward. With the dominant hand in the back, is this a better thrusting position or better for defence when have to block with the shaft? I know the ancient spearmen who carried a shield would obviously fight left side forward to put the shield in play. Greeks used their shields with a neck strap so that they could still control the shield or hold it in position when they put their left arm through the porpax (center grip) to grab the spear with two hands. Dark age Germanic types would either fight one handed spear or sling the shield over their back (with a neck strap)

Overhand grip or underhand grip? The overhand grip I believe gives more power to the thrust, but its on a high angle of attack, what is the overhand grip good for? Pinning a shield against its user? If I were taller I could see thrusting down into the chest or down to a leg. Underhand you pretty much have to go for the feet, or pin the shield against the user. Or I guess you could hit a side of the shield to try and pop it over to expose the shieldman to a second fighter's follow up (teamwork)

Maybe I should just watch Grumio's spear video on you tube.

Overhand grip or underhand grip?
- Use both. Easy enough to change around and both have applications as you pointed out. Overhand high thrusts and more power. Underhand is better defensively in coordination with a shield. *create that little nook in the sheild and you can rest the pole on the shield to help aim your underhanded blows*

The overhand grip I believe gives more power to the thrust, but its on a high angle of attack, what is the overhand grip good for? Pinning a shield against its user?
- Again as mentioned above each has its applications but also consider the length of the spear being used. Short spear is lighter and more accurate in thrust but comes short in reach. Long spear your going to have to 2 hand for both being able to properly use it. Short spear is easy to switch between both overhand and underhand. Long spear is traditionally underhanded but in certain phalanx situationsyou can easily switch to over handed so you do not have to break the shield wall to attack. Pinning a shield can be done in either style. I recommend using both styles to find gaps in your opponents defenses and pick away at him. remember though. If there wearing armor 1h Green isn't going to pierce. you have to 2hand

If I were taller I could see thrusting down into the chest or down to a leg. Underhand you pretty much have to go for the feet, or pin the shield against the user. Or I guess you could hit a side of the shield to try and pop it over to expose the shieldman to a second fighter's follow up (teamwork).
- You got it right in both aspects. In history spearman are group oriented melee meant to use there fellow warriors to create openings for one another through misdirection and forcing the opponent to leave openings. Unless your going to use the spear as a defensive obstacle and use another melee as well with it, you should fight with a partner.

Hope I helped you out Konradr. Smile

Konradr, I like to use both as we fight. I lead with my weaker side forward. I pivot, and help thrust with my left, but I control and power from the right arm. It is easy to start low or high and to change with the right arm coming up or down, bringing the tip the other way. (think aviation joystick control.) When I need to block I drop the tip and pivot on the left foot and bring the spear around with my right hand. By either pushing it out chest wise, to block the right. ( left foot forward) Or I drop the tip and pivot left foot and bring my right arm over my head to block left. But don't forget that if you don't have a shield you can always change your grips and move. You could also carry a smaller blue weapon in your right hand also, if both weapon grips are not to large to hold at once. Hope I helped, if not we can walk through it on Sat. or Sun.
