He was trying to start a t-shirt business with DJ. He didn't get to collect on the policy because he lied to the insurance company about being Josh' domestic partner. Josh also wasn't making $180,000. They were just trying to start a t-shirt business together and took it out on him.

Fucked up, yes. The above is just a minor explanation on a few points. I, personally, believe he killed him. The investigation continues. Hopefully, there will be an arrest.
