PostSubject: Learning to sew   Mon Jul 04, 2011 4:41 am

Hi all,

Have only just joined you guys in Barad'Dun but have found a really warm welcom from all I have met so far so thanks!

Ok, down to buisness, those who have met me, know I am learning to sew. So far I am not doing too bad but I need practice! And to do that I need willing victims - oops - I mean people to wear what I make.
I know you have Demie Zephyra as a sewer who has kindly offered her time for free/barter in learning new skills herself so I would like to make the same offer - the only stipulation being that I need you there when I make something for you... Reaon being, I can make sure it fits you then! Also, you can then get an idea of how much work goes into something simple like a tunic or trousers...

All I need from anyone who wants something made (simple things please!!!) is a working sketch/picture to see if I can do it, and the fabric and trimmings you want it made out of.

I currently work 4on 4off shifts so do have time to be flexable about hours to meet people, and I also have a car so if you cant make it to mine, I can pack up my sewing machine etc and come to yours.

Just so you do know what I can do here is a short list of things I have done to date,

Tunics (worn at Combat Con)
Trousers
Hooded tunics (my one for practice)
Proper sleeved tops (not the T shaped tunics mentioned above)
Bags
Skirts
Dresses.

None of it is fitted as tailoring is something I need to learn but I am hoping that all you lovely victimes... I mean people... will help me there by getting me to make stuff for you... And expand my knowledge of clothes making!

Heres in hope for some takers!

I LOVE cloaks!!! Was the first ting I ever made!!! Still got it... lovely red satin in the 'Red Riding Hood' style.

I can even do hooded ones and floor length ones - just didnt remember I had done them... I even have one being worn on stage by Miss Khandie Khisses in one of her burlesque acts in the UK.

What do you want? Very Happy Very Happy

aww - thx Very Happy

As to the cloak... long/short/inbetween? Big/small hood? Full circle/rectangular/shouldered cloak shape?

And what type of fabric? Will work with almost anything, but some fabrics need a lil more TLC than others Very Happy

I wouldn't mind a cloak too. But I'd really love a liripipe hood out of the linen I have left, if there's enough.

Would love to make you one... What are they...? lol

Will do some research before I commit but you do have plenty of fabric so a hood type item should be good provided you dont mind a hidden seam or two...

ok - looked into liripipe hoods. Seems there are various versions so you would have to get me a pic of the one you want.
If I remember correctly, you should have enough material left over for me to do one that comes with the shoulder cape (the mini one that just covers over the shoulders) and possibly add some of the trim that was left over.

Oh - there is a possiblilty that as you bought such good fabric, that I can properly adjust the neckline of your tunic, and change the trim on that too - I didnt cut it - its one long section round the neck from the center front so it is do-able. Let me know what you think.

That would be great Pryzm. Maybe we can do the measurements and cloth exchange at practice as I'm limited in what I can do during the week due to kids nad wife, etc, etc, etc. I didn't say ball and chains.

I actually made a liripipe hood out of brown linen but it was too small for me (I'm terrible at measuring cuz I'm lazy and I like to eyeball things). The hood fit my son really good and he liked it but it has since disappeared.

This is from a website on how to make the liripipe hood located here:making a Liripipe Hood.

The fabric depends on what you want the cloak for.

Are you at practice this saturday? If so I can bring different types of fabric and we can discuss your wants vs needs for it and work out what would be good for you.

I know personally, I am making myself a cloak out of some lovely silk but that is for feasting/sunshade use rather than practice/fighting garb.

Konradr,
Have had a look at that hood pattern now that I am home from work and can see the pics. Looks doable, but will have to check out the fabric pieces left from making the tunic as it may have to have a few discrete seams to create it, and I am unsure where the cape part will come until I see the fabric. I can bring my sewing kit saturday if you want to rough out the hood part and see how much is left for the rest of it if you like.

cool - I have bits n pieces that might work too (like the fabric my tunic is made from) as contrast to stretch your linen out. I think it should be fine tho. Will see when I get it in my hands Smile

We'll make sure to bring out the rest of the black fabric that we have left over from Konradr's tunic as well. We were going to bring it last week, but things got in the way.

ok - spent the last few days of my leave doing almost nothing but sew... I go back to work tomorrow... And I am still sewing - when I am not dancing around my lounge like a lunatic!

So... I have an order from Konradr for a liripipe hood which is the next thing on my list of 'to do's' - does anyone else want anything? Hxctemplar - I know you want a cloak - but tell me more! lol
I wont be at practice for the next 2 weeks so think on what you want and from what fabric. And if you want something specialist that needs a pattern, if you provide the pattern (after looking and making sure I can do it) I am happy to do it. Izzy and Convel have seen the results of me following a pattern to make a peasant shirt if you need to check on my work Very Happy

I work 4 on 4 off so am happy to spend a day off getting garb for you guys. As I said before, all I need is the material (pre washed and ironed) and you for the fittings... And if you want help buying fabrics etc for it, I can do that too.

(This sucks I dunno if these offers are still open! >.<) But I'm not picky, I will take anything you are wanting to practice cause I love the idea of all these, I might ask specifically for a little bag for like my phone and stuff cause that's convenient but I will wear any dress cloak tunic anything, just as long as it isn't like baby pink or yellow @_@;;; lol but if you want any practice I'm such a willing victim! And that's outside of the bedroom Wink But I also want to learn so I will want to be there the whole time your making it so I learn Smile then I can help too!

I am happy to do things for people, include teach if thats what they want - but the only thing they must do is decide what they want, and then speak to me before buying fabric (so we can work out how much is needed, and what is best to work with/wear). After that its just a case of turning up at mine with the fabric washed (it shrinks - you dont want that to happen after its been made into something) and ironed.

Have a think and then decide what you want Smile

Awesome ^^ I have no problem getting fabric, need to save up money though. mmmm, I want a thin material dress with a cheap but not easy to break bodice....boob pusher up thing for lounging and relaxing in for ren fair. Then a pair of fighting pants/shorts that are easy to move in and fight in for practice, a top um, I'm happy in my tank top but maybe a more appropriate garb to go over it that is also light and easy to move in. I need a little bag to hold my cell phone, contacts case, glasses case, etc. Those are the things at the top of my head that are practical, beginning garb that I would need to look not so.....erm, out of the loop with you guys. I probably would want the pants first, so once I get the fabric I can do everything you need for it XD I also hav a sewing machine at my place Smile
