Question About Glaives

Anyone with us use a glaive?

....and could I sweet talk them into letting me try it at one of our practices before I decide on my first kit?

Also. Is it legal to get a striking end on the butts of a glaive?

No butt end's can be striking. Hmmm, well, yes butt ends can be striking, but not in Dagorhir! In other words, in history yes they put spikes on the ends of spears and halbards and glaives, but we do not.

4.1.9.5. No weapon may have a spike or blade at the butt (pommel) end.

4.1.9.1. The pommel of a weapon must be padded to prevent injury in hte event of an accidental "hit" and must not easily go through a 2 inch-diameter hole.

We used to have a glaive, but it got broken and was transformed into the beehive behemoth.

I have a heavy Halbard that is awaiting repair. I am thinking of transforming it into a glaive.

The next question then is: do staves have to be symmetrical? or can a pole-arm with two business ends just count as a staff for Dag purposes?

Hmmm, good question.....I will read up and see. Definately would be considered a quarterstaff and a blue. Can't say about the symetrical part (brainiac). Three ways to find out, ask Kurn, check the handbook or ask a question on the Dagorhir official forum (or research topic's beginning with 'glaive')

Don't sweat it. A glaive is easier to make if you make the back end to a specific weight anyway. Which means adding electrical tape to taste toward the end of the process, until the balance is right. That's generally incompatible with a second striking surface unless you're lucky or smarter than me. *acts all brainiac like*

Does this work?

You hold a pole like you're going to use it. Then adjust the balance to your top hand. Not the other way around. That's why you should make your own weapon and then the distance from your top hand to the tip should be comparable to a longsword.

Ive heard of builds with a polearm and having the weapon end and the butt being a spear.

Is that legal in Dagorhir rules?

You can make a quarter-staff with uneven sides that looks like a weapon on the pommel, but quarter-staves have to be round.

One of our guys a while back, made a two-hander sword for it's original intent, but he made a huge end for the pommel. When I used it, I would hold the huge end forward and block with. And then I would wait for an opening and slam them with the business end, I already had it behind me, so I didn't have to pull back for a swing.

It was an interesting weapon, and I'll have to try and recreate it.

I have made and seen weapons that were basically glaives with a small striking surface on the 'butt' end.
However, in recent readings of the handbook, BOTH ends need to be 18" long and cylindrical.
So sorry to ruin all the fun.

Haha. Is there a rule against having too large of a pommel?

Basically, my previous post was describing a two hander sword with a pommel large enough to block with. And when the other guy would swing, I would block it and give him a taste of some red. The blocking end can't actually cause striking damage, but it definitely comes in handy.

The only disadvantage I found was that it didn't do well when I was rushed. I could block most of the shots, but I couldn't pull off a powerful enough hit to cause damage. But it pwns all when you keep your opponent at full range.

My question is: Is an overlarge pommel legal to the point that it can be used as a small unbreakable shield attached to the end of your weapon? LOL!

technically there is no rule preventing a large pommel. the only rule i would watch out for is the rule 4.1.11.2.5 - Balance above the top of the handle (i.e., blade heavier than handle.) in my personal opinion that's an extremely cheezy thing to do.

My blue sword in my profile pic is actually weighted very nicely, right above the top of the handle. And it swings like a feather, but you can still feel the weight. It's insane, and I hope to have all of my weapons weighted that way. I can't stand swinging a heavy blade anymore.

yeah i prefer weighted weapons too. they swing light and can hit hard.

No. No it is not. Only staves can be double-ended.

Also note that in order to have ONE end pass, BOTH ends must pass on a staff. You can't just say 'oh, but I'll only use the passing end'. We don't trust you enough.

Also, double-ended weapons, no matter what, are blue. Sure, you might use it with two hands. Sure, it might be over 48" long. Sure, it might be over 24 ounces. It's a blue. So if you put a butt onto a glaive, your glaive would go from being red to being blue.



In regards to your original question about glaives, I do recommend them. In large battles where shield walls are key (Ragnarok and such), polearms are the primary killing force on the field. If you do plan to make one, however, use a bandshoppe pole. Do NOT use PVC. It will not survive if you use PVC. Fiberglass is the only way to go with polearms.
