Hey Kurn wanted to ask you about this idea for a sling staff. I was thinking of using some rope and making a sling for rocks, but I heard Smithy talking last Saturday about someone using a lacrosse stick for a sling staff. I have a bunch of jr lacrosse sticks and they have padded handles. I was wondering about using one as a sling staff to sling 'rocks'. I would assume they could be used unpadded as in a category similar to Bows. You could block a weapon strike with one and then it would be broken, otherwise you never use one for any kind of contact. Could probably sling 'rocks' pretty good though. What d'ya think?

K'urn made a girl at Ragnarok a weapon from LotR, she was portraying a halfling. It was a small spear with a leather pouch at the end so she could run by and pick up rocks to fling.

It was actually from Dragonlance. It's called a Hoopack. When I took the Hoopack to weapons check at Rag the only concern was the courtesy padding, they felt i needed more due to the way in which the weapon was used. basically you swing the weapon, meaning that anyone running in on you could get hit.

That being said, if it were me i would pad the whole thing as if it were a haft to a glaive. However, in Barad'Dun you can make whatever rules you wish, meaning, if you want to use just the lacrosse sticks, do it . Play test it, if it works, use it.

I like the idea of categorizing it as a bow would be, but, there is something to be said for the way in which the weapon works, i.e. forward swinging motions.

Play with it. If you want to make a Hoopack looking thing, let me know and I will talk you through it.

I think I will pad the lacrosse stick. I can see how to pad it in my mind so I will try that. Make some more rocks and give it a go. Thanks for experience. I saw it as a missile launching weapon only but I didn't visualize the difference that you were swinging the stick, like a sword motion, rather than the bow type action. I think it still could be designated like a bow, but definately would have to be padded.

That then draws up another question. If I were to pad it completely, including at least 3 layers of open cell foam around the head, leaving only the string net portion unpadded, would it, could it be considered a blue? Like a club?

The hoopak (I looked at images on google) just a missile throwing weapon or a padded blue as well? Strider said a 'spear like' thing. Just curious. I'm going to pad a lacrosse stick and see what comes of that.

Well K'urn made hers into a spear thing for melee combat, but I don't know if it was really meant to stab with.

As a blue??? I don't know.

The one I did had a green tip, as Strider mentioned, for melee combat.

Thinking on it......maybe you could put the 'pouch' on the pommel end, then build a blade on the other. Sort of a short glaive design??

That's possible. Or maybe I'll just pad it for safety and use it as missile only, like a bow. Though, like you, a green is possible too. I mean if I put a good stabby on the opposite end of the pouch. Could the pouch then be considered the 'pommel'. Not allowed to put striking ends on a pommel. Would a 'sling' ie. the pouch be considered a 'striking' end if its used for missiles? I would think striking end would mean an end that physically in itself, strikes the target. Forgive any misspellings, one of the cats is in front watching the letters magically appear and I can't see the screen.

Hmnmm, I'll start with the missile ony weapon, ditch it in close combat or use it to block though it breaks the weapon, and we'll see how it works. I will mass produce some rocks too. hehe. Hey might work good for Goblin horde, I mean to chuck in an arc over the walls. However, now we are using a bridge over a lava pit, since we don't have any vertical type walls.

Tried the Jr. Lacrosse stick experimentally and it didn't really work well. The rocks are too light and seem to just shoot down to the feet rather than make a nice bee line for a head shot.

Back to the drawing board.
