Do you have it?

Many of us who went to Samhain got to see skillful red users and how they have the potential to dominate the battle field. So just wanted to start a thread to discuss if you had red fever and your thoughts on red fighting

I'll ask Isk to post over here......he's our best red fighter and has real world martial arts (german longsword [among others]) practice.

Fighting red is exhilarating. If you do it right, its like a dance moving fluidly from one guard to the next - always turning a defensive move into an attack. Pure beauty in its form and power.

Used a red glaive and Yestare X and I remember Surt said ''The worst injury I got was from Templar when he used a glaive on me. The fact that someone from my realm hurt me more then other Bel fighters makes me proud.''

Haven't used a red since. I have a min red sword (with an awesome cover <3 ) but I don't have the skill to use it. Would be good to start up the red classes again at Practice

I don't have the skillz to use a red either. I can't generate enough force and I'm always worried about hurting someone if I do it wrong. Usually when I have a red in my hands, its a glaive and I either poke at them like a spear or try to hack their lower legs. I don't think I've ever "broken" a shield because I hit too light or am afraid of hurting someone if I swing high.

But those who do have the skillz are devastating. I keep telling support people ,like Archers, peeps with Jav's and spearmen to pick off the reds andenemy spears first.

When fighting a Red, you need to have a shield friend next to you and then keep the red at a distance. If he closes, the two of you should rush him right when his weapon connects with your shield. Don't give him time to reload and strike again. Close and kill him. You can do the same if you are on your own but only if the Red user is on his own too. If he has support you will need support or you won't get close enough to him.

I love reds even though I haven't used one for a while. I'm not an expert at using them, but I have broken a few shields with them before. Plus, I want the red classes to start again too we have a lot of new people that want to try out reds atleast once and we shouldn't tell them they have to wait to take classes for them if no one is holding a class for reds.

Tibby sent me back over since I haven't been online as much lately. I missed seeing you guys at Samhain, but I'm looking forward to your event next month.

Better yet, punch block the red on your way in. If you do it well enough, you don't let him get a good hit on your shield and then you are up in his grill and can wrap shot his backside. Remember, range really, really matters in this game and if a S&Ber lets the red dictate the range the shield will always lose.

Tibby generously overrated my skills, but I do enjoy fighting red and I agree with Taco, fighting red is a whole lot more of a workout than fighting sword and board. I'd love to fight red with you guys next time we get together. Red fighting is more elegant than S&B, IMHO, and it's really about good body mechanics. Most new red fighters try to generate power by making Conan swings, but it is really all about leverage. You push forward a little with the lead hand and the rear hand pulls the weapon in, using the lead hand as a fulcrum. Done right, you should be able to deliver plenty of power starting the red only a foot away from the target.

Who was fighting red at Samhain that got you guys all excited?

****** EDIT -- Disclaimer: Neither, Isk, ATD, Barad'Dun, Belegarth or Dagorhir will assume any liability if you are stupid enough to punch-block reds with your bare hands. Do not punch-block reds without well-padded gloves people. Just reread my post and thought that ought to be said because some people have been known to try this stunt.

Were they doing something different? Fork and Magnus always fight red. Were there just not enough archers and javs on the field?

Thanks isk. My point exactly. Speed and range. Got to move fast and with dedication, no hesitating, do or die.

it was a first event for some and it was a learning experience that inspired a lot of talk about red fighting.

I myself used a red for the first time at our last practice. i felt i did really well for my first time. it really is much more of a workout, body was sore all night after.

Thanks for posting Isk.

There were enough archers to take out Rumbeard, Forkbeard, Magnus, and Wolfric with their reds, but there were more than enough targets for them to also get good time in stacking up the bodies.

I also look forward to red fighting with you guys at the event.

When you've been fighting less than 6 months, most red shots you deliver are your fault. Especially when you've only fought 5 or so times with red. Regardless you should always take responsibility for the bad hits you deal and take a death.

As you use a red more often, the better you will learn how to control your shots. A lot of people who are new tend to do the 'Kendo' Stance, where you hold your weapon above your head in a vertical direction and swing downward like a head shot. From what we learn from the classes, by holding your weapon at a diagonal angle you actually have better control with your shot and build more power. Taking the classes (including green classes for those unfamiliar with spear work as well) only betters you. Don't get too discouraged when you accidentally do a head shot. Just learn from the mistake, make sure the other person is ok and take the death.

Coming straight down is known as the Scheitelhau or Oberhau and is a legit shot to throw, because in real life it was meant to come crashing down through skulls and helmets. It can be dangerous, but it also can be safe and useful for taking shoulders and shields while intimidating the shit out of your enemy. I use it for that purpose alone quite a bit.

Coming from an angle (Zornhau )may be safer in that you're not in line with a head and will be swinging into the center of the target from a bit off to the side, but you lose defensive capability by moving your weapon tip off center. That's a key factor to consider and work your guards around for optimal speed and reaction time. In real longsowrd fighting, there are cross guards on the weapons which enable blade catching, hooking, rotating, and stabs to the face. It takes practice, but its well worth it to pursue.

Here's an informational website with information I've read in Isk's German Fechtmeister manuals: http://www.thearma.org/essays/mastercuts.html

Yeah but your new to using reds, as we all were once. And the only thing that I was trying to say is that we should have more red classes more often if were gonna tell them they can't use them until they take a red class :p

This topic has just been addressed to the Unit leaders for a solution. It may take a bit for a complete answer but I'm confident that one will be found.

I really don't like reds because of the weight. I'd like to get good with either sword-and-board or florentine before I move on to anything else. I'd really love to take classes nonetheless. Learning is always fun for me Razz
