PostSubject: Changes to the Sash..........   Changes to the Sash.......... I_icon_minitimeSun Nov 22, 2009 4:17 pm

The Black sash with the red star on it, which was to represent all Mercenaries within the Realm, will now become the Realm sash. All of Barad'Dun's populace will be given this sash to wear and represent the Realm.

The Royal Army will wear both the Realm Sash and their Rank Sash.

From my calculations, and hopefully with some careful scissor work, we can get 12 Sash's from 1 yard of black cloth. (36 inches X 44 inches) And I'm thinking 'Trigger' for the cloth since it is not too expensive and is tough stuff. We probably need about 40 realm sash's to begin with, and that would be about 4 yards of cloth if my calculations are correct.

For the Royal Army, we need about, I think 25 Sash's right now. So that would be about 2 to 3 yards of a cloth as yet to be determined. However, Me, Surt and Kilanos are planning a cloth expedition this week.

The sash is 6 inches wide by 12 inches long with a dagged tip. 3 more inches for the belt loop. The total rectangular shape to be cut out is 18 inches long (doubling over the 6 inches to make the belt loop) and 7 inches wide (doubling over 1/2 inche on either side for the hem) Does this sound feasable to any of you seamstress's out there or do we need to make more room for the hemming?

1/2 inch for the hemming is perfect. =]

Just as a suggestion, I'd check Walmart before deciding on a fabric.
It's inexpensive and sometimes, they have some good stuff.

Just not often.
I'm not sure about heavier materials,
but it's worth a shot for a tight budget.

Do they carry 'trigger' or is it called "broadcloth"? It's the cloth they use to make historical fencing attire out of (Like 4 layers of it) and some modern fencing. I think older fencing jackets were made out of cotton duct.

question, What can I use to draw out the patterns I need to cut out to make the sashes. I mean, if I measure and use a sharpie the marker line won't wash out or fade, right? So what should I use, a colored pencil, chalk, a regular pencil? What?

They actually make chalk pencils just for the purpose.
But, if the fabric is light enough, a regular pencil works too.
If it's too dark, a white colored pencil or chalk works just fine. =]

Konrad, BE SURE to get fabric that is not going out of style. We need to be able to reproduce the exact fabric, ...say five or ten years from now. I would also suggest getting the SKU number from the bolt so you can get that exact stuff later. To facilitate this, I would get the fabric from a JoAnns or Michaels or similar place. Walmart tends to get 'whatever is put on the truck' type of loads.

Good point.
Unfortunately, there's only like, one or two JoAnne's in town now.

And most of the Michael's I've been to don't carry fabric.

If you do go to JoAnne's though,
I think I have some coupons. :]

There is a JoAnnes close to me, on Marks street. I plan on going there either tomorrow or Wednesday morning. I was in Walmart on Marks today (across from Sunset Station and the Galleria mall) and they have some nice black cotton/poly ($1.97 a yard) that would be good for loaner garb, shield covers and the like. They have some nice black cotton Homespun ($2.24 a yard) which looks more natural than the cotton/poly and would breathe more. I don't know if either has the thickness to be durable for a sash. I think they have some black canvas too, but that would ruin poor Demie's needles.

So I will head to JoAnne's and see if they have "trigger" (Isk says its called 'Target' now) black for the realm sash and a dark tan or khaki for the Royal Army Sash. I sold my two rapiers but not my fencing dagger. And after spending half on groceries and then buying glue & tape for foam smithing, I do not have much left, but should be able to buy 4 to 6 yards of cloth. But it will be a rush to get the sashes made by the weekend. (and then the embroidery is still up in the air, as I don't know how much that would cost or if we have the money) The Realm donation box contains $8.00 at present.

Haha. Templar does embroidery.

But, I dunno how long it would take him to do it.

They do it very quickly at the swap meet on Decatur though. =o
I don't know how much it is.

And I plan on putting more in the donation box.
