PostSubject: Tasks for Fool's Raid.   Tasks for Fool's Raid. I_icon_minitimeSun Mar 14, 2010 5:21 pm

me, Smithy, and Surt are trying to organize things for Fool's raid, of course we can't do everything by ourselves. As things come up, things that we'll need or need to be done, we'll post them here. If any of you have the time or resources to do a task, Post here that you will do it and when. Don't post if you are not sure, only if you CAN do it. Anything still needed, that has not been done, we will manage before fool's raid.

Anybody with previous big event experience please chime in if you think we need these tasks or not. (Surt, Kurn, Smithy, Taco & Caretaker)

First task that comes' to mind is new Headbands. We'll call this the HEADBAND TASK (ain't I creative) We have about 50 or more coming to the Fool's Raid. Possibly 6 different Realms. I'm thinking we will need at least 4 sets of headbands in different colors, maybe 5. Let's say Red, Green, Blue, and White. The headbands don't have to be sewn or hemmed. Just cut 2" wide times the length of the cloth (which in most cases will be 36", plenty for a headband). You can fold the cloth carefully several times and use a sharp pair o' scissors for a nice, short, clean cut.

Cloth. You can use the cheap cotton/poly cloth at Walmart. It's $1.97 a yard. Buy it in Yard lengths. Each yard is 44" wide, so you could make 22 headbands each. So for 5 yards of cloth at a cost of $10 you could have 88 headbands, 4 sets, each a different color.

Everyone, check my calculations and make sure I got them right.

Task: BANNER UPGRADE.

There are two tasks that would have to do with the banner, both utilize sewing, which I can only handsew.

A. This one is two ride stripes or hems running down each side of the banner. (See picture below) This one is not really a priority, I just think it would look good.

B. Three cloth loops sewn on the back of the banner as pictured below. The top loop is vertical, the bottom two are horizontal. The top loop is meant to for the pole that the banner is attached to, so that it is more secure against the wind. The two bottom loops are to hold a cross piece of wood or PVC to keep the banner from folding in any wind. Now I could do these loops in Velcro tape if no one can sew them.

..........that's it? lol xD was expecting something crazy like ''MAKE A BATTALION'S WORTH OF TOWER SHIELDS!!!!!''

I can do all that if ya want Konradr. I'm a beast at hand sewing (since I don't have the hand-eye cordination for machine sewing), so I can sew both the red hems + the back pieces if I can get matching fabrics for the banner.

I can also take care of the head bands if you don't mind if they are like the ones we have now [just long pieces of cloth that you can tie together].

Can have the headbands done by next practice, the banner by the practice after.

NICE SHIELDS Knubbs!!!

I don't need a tower, but if I did, I would make mine out of ABS plastic for the wieght.

Oddvar has 8 tower shields he was making. They are about 4 1/2 feet tall by about 2 1/2 to 3 feet wide and are, I kid you not, about a foot thick pure foam!!! They are huge, look like street barrikade's but are light! He was working on Straps for them, and covers. Get with him, maybe we can snatch them up and finish them for him.

Templar, those are only the first two tasks, as we need more We will post them. Thank you for the headbands, can you buy the fabric? I will get you the banner next week, and I believe I have enough khaki cloth for the straps so I will pass that on to you to. If at some time during the week and can get it to you earlier, I will. Thank you.

Task 3: 5 GALLON WATER JUGS.

Not the square kind, the kind you see on the back of a Jeep (I have two, one usuable) but the square blue kind they use for emergancy water. the one's with the spigots. Can anyone find maybe two or three of those we can fill at a water place and bring? I think they have a big circular opening where you can put crushed ice in and fill like half water half ice. Anyone know for sure?

Now, we won't need those if Smithy has got one of those Army Lister bags. The big green canvas bags that hold about 50 gallons of water, is lined with drinking spouts, that you hang on a tripod and fill with ice and water??? and the tripod that goes with it.

After the weapons build day we should strongly consider a thorough weapon check and decide if some weapons should just be remade/scrapped or if they'll be safe for Fool's Raid loaners? (Course most people who travel to events have their own weapons...)

No I don't have a Lister bag but DAMNIT Konradr now I want to build one. It would be rediculously easy to do. Lemme se if I've got the canvas for it. All it takes is three 8 foot closet dowels, four plastic spigots, three yards of canvas, teen feet of rope, silicone sealer, and a thick plastic bag.

I don't have school this week so if you want to meet just give me a call Konradr and I can pick up the banner from you.

Knubbs, on those shields, are you + Smithy going to make them by yourselves, or those who want them going to have to provide a roll or two of foam?

If you don't mind some prep work there is a way to make a curved tower shield. I've built one in the past using 2 sheets of 2 foot by 4 foot pre cut plywood that were 1/4 inch thick by layering them, but you could use one sheet at 3/8 inch thickness. Soak the wood and use some rope to bend it to the desired curve. Use about 50 feet of rope to get an even bend all the way down. It will put a bit of a curve in the whole shield. Let it dry and then cut desired shape. You at least have to get rid of sharp corners. I use the size of a quart paint can for rounding my corners.

To answer your question Barricade, I would find a 4'x4' sheet of 3/8 inch birch for a meaty wood punch shield. Should cost 25-30 dollars. Go thicker for a strap. But given the width of your present shield you'll need to find at least a 4'x4' piece. That way all you have to do is cut off 1 foot 3 inches by 4 feet and you'll have a 2 foot 9 inch by 4 foot wood core. The additional side layering of foam will bring the width to 3 feet or just under. Remember 3 feet is the max width for shields.

I can help with the construction on Suday if you'd like. Did I mention that you with a strap tower would be a little scary? I mean seriously, are you trying to stop traffic or something?

I'm trying to make a maximum dimension tower shield. Each shield would be tailored to each person as best as possible. Shields are a very personal thing because of the arm placement and the size restrictions based on the person wielding it.

The wood I'm planning on using is thin but strong and will only be one layer of it, and since im right down the street from a Home Depot, easy to get.

For those of you asking about cost it will be as cheap as possible but ANYTHING, and i mean anything you can donate to make the shields would be ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY AWESOME in every way. When we get the shields done i would recommend a donation of some kind to the chapter for the shields be it in $ or Stuff to help out.

'quatch, The curved shields take days to make because of soaking and the glue steps, but it will be done.. oh yes... it will be done.

Smithy, PM me the stuff i'll try and stock up on for the Weapon's Build Day & also the basics for the Shields we need to get, I have some extra cash and can go on a Ramen diet to get this shit done.

Templar, Anything you want to give for the creation of the shields will be helpful and in the end cheaper.

Different color head bands are not necessary. They are nice to have and can be made very easily by shredding a few yards of cloth, but not something I would list high up on a to do list.

For an event, I would put;
1 Knowledgeable Officials = Heralds who know the rules and know how to enforce them
2 Checking Equipment = scales, rulers, templates, rule set with any additions
3 Usable Equipment = weapons/shields that will pass a check
4 Safety Gear = Water, first aid kit, directions to the nearest; hospital/gas station/food mart
5 Paper work = Waviors, sign in sheets, a place to keep said papers from blowing away
6 Field check = Walking the field before use and removing any large rocks or marking any sizable holes
7 Game Equipment = Flags, beacons, ropes, cones, head bands

that is the plan smithy Smile i prefer Punch shields for the mobility. I have never tried a strap shield so not sure how it would work. but a nice wooden shield to help me move people... more... might be nice
