Computer programs......

So I'm getting a new laptop for my birthday. Not a top of the line model, but it will be alot more advanced than my old laptop which has become the family computer since the death of our PC.

I would like to load it with free apps that are good to have. Any suggestions? I like to write, and draw and video capture/edit. Thinking of trying some ereader programs as well. As for antivirus I have been using 'Avast' and 'Malwarebytes' thanks to Isk's suggestions and am happy with them. I like using utorrent for torrent downloads and Cabos for music downloads. So just looking for suggestions for these kind...

Writing programs.
Video watching programs.
Graphics programs (drawing, etc)
video editing/capture.
Music listening.

For Browsers I like Mozilla firefox.

and i use Itunes

You used to be able to get photoshop for free off limewire.


But, Photofiltre is free and is easier to use. :]

I have a copy of Microsoft office 7 and photoshop 7 you can install.

Security:
-Anti-virus I use AVG. The freeware edition is perfect.
-I use both Spybot A&D and Adware.
*Spybot lets you secure your host file and scan for malware, The scan is slow.
*Adware just scans for malware but its faster and more resource efficient.

Media
-Audacity is a great free sound editing software.
-Photoshop 7 Its less alot smaller and less options then CS5+ But it gets the job done if your not an artist.
-Winamp is my Music player.
-VLC is my Main video player.
-I also have a copy of PowerDvD10 incase your new Laptop can play blueray.
-Windows movie maker for beginner movie making.

I also do 3d animate with maya.
In all honestly windows movie maker is NOT as bad as people make it out to be. Its good for basic stuff.
I use aftereffects and pro-tools.

What kind of compression software does everyone use? Winzip? 7zip? I use to have one that had an egg as its logo. Worked really good but showed add's while doing it so I guess it was spyware or something.

Hmmm, I've been playing with my new laptop all day. I might have over done it on the downloading of programs. Put about 30gb of stuff on. I finally got Skype and put it on both my new laptop and old one so I can call home when I'm away. The new laptop is kjbowker2 and the old one is kjbowker. I've been skyped!

7zip is fine. I use winrar just because I tend to compress animation files and 7zip hates me.

Definitely get rid of whatever antivirus is pre-installed and install AVG Free:D

VLC for playing Movies.

Windows Media player works just fine for playing music (as long as it has WIN7, which I'm sure it will) Programs like Winamp take some customization and going through settings to get it to work the way you'd like.

If I was out there i could give you a copy of Photoshop, though you can look into Gimp, its free to DL.

For video editing, Try to see if you can get a cracked copy of Sony Vegas....It's a powerful program.
