I'd assume he's a friend of Smithy's from the Desert Rats in Kuwait.

But who knows....

I know a couple of people who call themselves Desert Rats after ops in Iraq... One of my best m8s was out there and she got the t-shirt (literally - the UK mil do things like op t-shirts if you earned it) for the Deserts Rats - she was one of the few females that was considered front line as she was RAF Police and was going out and doing searches on females and children. She loved every minute of it until she had the front vehicle blown up in her convoy. Too many mates went home one way or another that day.

And to be honest - the 7th Armoured Devision of the UK army was the first unit to sport the 'Desert Rats' name - from the second world war... I dont think any other unit used the nickname before then. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/2676525.stm
