| My thought was like ten dollars for a sword. However, when you build your weapon we also want you to build a sword that will go into the loner weapons pile. We need to have plenty of weapons on hand for any newcomers to use, until they can build their own, and it will be good practice. K- | |

| I regret to inform everyone that I will NOT be able to host a weapons build day on the fourth of April. I have been incompetent and double booked myself. I would ask if everyone is O.K. with pushing it to the following week, April 11th? Same time, same place. I greatly apologize, I have a 'thing' going on in the afternoon of the 4th, and I want to devote as much time as possible to everyone who wants to show. So...chime in, and tell me what a douche bag I am. K- | |

douche bag!
lol j/k. it is what it is man well that being said what is everyones opinions? do you guys care to push it back? or should we find a new place to do it. the benefit of doing it at k'urns is that he has every tool you could possibly need plus 20+ years of weapon making xp. so i personally think we should wait. i don't mind sitting out battles at practice so everyone else can play.

| hey K'urn. I want a long (yet light sword) and a strap shield, a kite would be great....... do you have the tools to help me make this happen.... I am willing to put forth the time and money to make two each happen? I'm pretty sure I can get some golf shafts for the swords and a sheet of plywood is no biggie. I was thinking 3/4" thick on the plywood.... any suggestions?
I can get: plywood golf shafts bolts, nuts, washers dap
I need: foam help
I don't check the board that often so please text/call if I won't see you before the 11th.

| Ximali.
I have used golf shafts in the past, they can work. However in my experience they tend to come apart early, due to the tapered design. With that said, I do know a process that would work, but it won't last as long as a fiberglass sword might. How long were you thinking? For the shield, you can use 3/4", it will be heavy. Depending on the size and style you can probably get away with 1/2". I have foam here we can use, ( note to Surt; We still need to get some foam strips). You will also need nuts and bolts each 3/16" or 1/2" whichever you prefer, and fender washers (VERY important). You will need 4, I suggest getting six...just in case. I have some leather we can use for the handle. I also have some webbing, all I have is 1", you should use 2" webbing ( hit up an army surplus store, I know Hann's Surplus on Lake Mead carries it by the foot) you will need enough to wrap your arm, and wrap your body. You've seen my shield so you know what I mean. I have a jigsaw, it works, but it would be easier to cut with a band saw. if you have access. If you cut it yourself before you come over, the diameter needs to be 2" smaller than what you want the finished size to be. Let me know how big you want it so I can know if I have foam big enough to cover it.
Knubbs,
How long of a great sword? ( i'm assuming you want a red?) How long of a short sword?
Any one else. The more notice notice I have on what you want the better it will turn out. ('cause I'll be prepared)

| There are actually two ways of doing it. One is you can simply buy a plastic or cardboard barrel, and cut out the shape you want. Two is, you can do what is called laminating. A process where you would have two pieces of 1/4" plywood glued together and lashed to a barrel while the glue dries. At which point you would simply cut out the shape you want.
Cardboard or plastic would be MUCH lighter. Plywood would hold up better, and is messier.

| the barrel i have is not long enough for the shield length i want so i'll probably just have to laminate. | |

| Tagging along with surt I'll end up laminating as well! Um, Greatsword Length: 34 inch blade w/ 16 inch handle/guard/pummel = 50 inches total Bluesword Length: 24 inch blade w/ 12 inch handle/guard/pummel = 36 inches total what do you think on these K'urn? | |

| sword -52" blade 20" handle (not including pommel)... red, of course! sword -36" blade 12" handle (not including pommel)... not red sword -32" blade 10" handle (not included pommel)... not red kite shield -finish dimensions 48" x 26" at widest points
I'll make a list of the materials you mentioned and whatever else you indicate.
We'll have to use your scroll saw... I have a steady hand.
Let me know if 1/2" of 3/4" plywood would be best... I want a durable shield... but at the same time I don't want it to be too heavy... does 5/8" plywood exist?
I can get a sheet of plywood, the washers, nuts, and the strap... cash is tight right now so please let me know if we will be able to build these with the materials available, other wise I'll be happy with a 28" round and a sword with a 32" blade.
We should go with your best judgment regarding the cores.

| I don't know. If it does exist that would be good. If not, for proven durability, I'd go with the 3/4". It will be heavy, but to go with 1/2" would be trading durability for weight. Make sure the sheet you get is in good quality. (As one builder to another, I'm sure you know how to grade wood) lol. If you want your shield curved, you should go with the two 1/4" sheets laminated idea. The starting size for the core will be about 4" smaller than the finished size. You may not have to get a whole sheet. The red swords would be best done with PVC, the fiberglass I have will flex to much. Hold off on that for now though, because I am hunting for some better foam for reds.
For the blues, we can try the fiberglass I have on hand. I'm not sure what the flex issues may be at that length, but it should be negligible.
Surt and I purchased foam yesterday, so we should have plenty to start. I'm not sure if we'll have enough large un cut pieces for everyone's shields, but it won't be hard to get more. I also purchased some webbing, I think I'll have enough for two shields. So if someone who wants a shield can pick up some more they sell it at Hahn's Surplus (east lake mead) for .44 cents a foot. I bought ten foot.
edhellen.com for the arrow kits... lancaster archery.com for the shafts. I usually go with the Vapor Hunter Black Series #1330047 size 400. That's 32" shafts with a spine tolerance of .400 inches and a weight of 7.4 grains per inch. The bare shafts run $45 for a dozen if you get them made to order it's ten dollars more.
For blue sword lengths anything around 24"- 30" blade, and a 6"-10" handle is good. Anything longer and you run into counterbalancing issues.
