Badge ideas

We were talking during the weapons build about different badges one can attain for the final rank in the army (don't remember exactly what you called them) and I had another couple of ideas.

How about one for someone that helps show new members the "ropes" by introducing them to fighting, the rules, the different weapons. Someone that can take a new person with no knowledge of Dagorhir, teach them what they need to know to start fighting and maybe a few basic attacks and defenses to get them started.

On that note, how about one for people that actively go out and recruit new members? They can do all the things we have talked about in the recruiting thread (Pass out pamphlets at UNLV/Ren Fair) as well as maybe admin a meetup group through meetup.com or anything else that can be thought of.

I like those ideas, especially the promotions one. I like the teaching one as well, but I would hope we would do that to better the unit not to just get a commendation.

think the badges were called commendations or something.

I would like it if there was a way to maybe get some battle commendations like if there was a way to keep track of who won a free for all battle with 10 or more people, and lets say if they do it 50 times or so they would get one. Not sure if its possible to keep track of something like this but i think it would be neat. Also maybe winner of Valhalla X amount of times and make it a high number so it takes a while but an attainable one.

I agree K'urn, and I think most people who will do recruiting will do it to make the realm better. I'm not one who is big on going out and trying to get people to join other then talking to some friends about it but it is always nice to get recognized for hard work you put in. As for teaching, I would like to see someone at practice with a folder with consent forms, maybe a pamphlet describing each of the different weapon types, benefits for armor, information on foam and armor smithing and anything else people regularly have questions on. As we have seen, people have been interested in the idea of recruiting without any incentive and will do it without any commendation, however, the way I see commendations are as recognition for doing something that you already enjoy doing and not as something you actively try to achieve (unless it is something you were interested in doing in the first place and just didn't have a reason to start). I'm sure there will be those out there that will take up different extracurricular activities for the sole purpose of gaining commendations but hopefully most will do them for the sole purpose doing them.

we do have a folder with consent forms. as for the info about armor and weapons its all in the handbook which is also in the folder. also the best source of info is from the members of the group themselves. if someone has questions don't send them to read the handbook. talk with them and explain and answer there questions verbally. use the charisma i know you all have.

also i could see doing an commendation for recruiting. but your right when you say you should be doing everything for the benefit of the realm anyway and not just for commendations. as for the craftsman commendations they are definitely there to help recognize how awesome someone is at doing said craft. but i don't think its bad that someone who isn't particularly fond of foam smithing to try to achieve commendations in foam smithing. or any other craft. at least they know how to build weapons now or make armor. and thats one more person a new member can ask for help.

as cool as it would be i'm not sure it would be possible to keep track of every bodies victories and defeats. and i'm not sure i would want to. practice is exactly what it is, a practice. its there for you to have fun, learn, make mistakes, and try new ideas. if you only cared about winning every practice it might not be as fun. as far as visiting other realms and events i would most definitely like to keep track of peoples deeds and i would most definitely expect everyone to give it there all and try to win. to work as a team to achieve victory. its up to everyone to watch your fellow fighters and report there good and ill acts on and off the field to the attention of the officers. i will always be watching everyone as much as i can but obviously i can't watch all of the people all of the time. so if someone does a flying bicycle kick over the other realms line and kills there king and pole vaults back over with a spear they stole from them then you should tell an officer. and maybe be scared of there mad skillz.

That would be an awesome idea. It would be hard to do. Most of the ideas we have right now are battle commendations. We are already planning on giving out commendations and awards for tournament fighting. We are planning to (when things finally kick off) have a cookout/feast like once per month or every three months (to keep up with the rank trials). We could do the tournaments then. Our plan is to ALWAYS give out ranks in a feast type atmosphere...a celebration if you will. At these feasts commendations will be awarded, ranks will be given, and food will be eaten.
Also, at these events, some people will be given the chance to earn some specialized commendations like cooking for example.

I took a look at the Dragoon ranks that you sent me, it seems very similar to what we are doing. Only real difference I see is they make you test with standard equipment and we let you test with your personal kit. I like both ideas, I do think that people should try to broaden their skills and the weapons they use. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to change out their kit a lot. So, it was decided that we would only ask you to be proficient with whatever style of fighting you choose. This also helps to promote the back story of Barad'Dun (us being an outpost at a cross roads) by allowing all sorts of different cultures on the field, fighting with what ever they have.
