Thx for taking time out to leave your family thing, and come to say 'hi' to all of us at practice. I don't think you were loud enough when you said "I want a heart shaped shield for my B-day, anyone?"
Say it again. Make 'em listen to the yearnings of a young woman.

Use Blue Camping mat, one or two rolls. Cut out about 24" X 24" heart shape about 5 or 6 times. Use DAP and glue each together.
Take your first one and cut out a rectangle large enough for say 18" PVC. DAP that to another layer, then cut out a circle right in the center for a handgrip (punch shield) Then DAP on 4 or 5 more layers to the front. It will be sturdy and very light. Cut out a strip of foam as wide as the edge and DAP it so it goes all around the edge as a 'cap'.
Use Gorilla glue to attache the pvc pipe in the center. Put the Gorilla glue on the PVC pipe and in the channel (I drilled some holes in the PVC pipe to encourage the glue to foam into them and harden) Spray (A fine misting should do) then put the PVC in there and some weight on it (center where the glue won't be) and let it sit overnight.
Cut two squares of Foam and DAP it over the two ends of the PVC so it helps hold it in place and makes the ends of the PVC safe from catching hands, etc.
You can also make a 24" X 24" square and when its all done and has dried (overnight) you could carve the heartshape then glue the edge strip on.
Get cloth, cover it and stitch.
Or you can check out Grumio's video.
If your interested in a Strapped shield, check out the Armory section on weapon creation. There are some shield tutorials there with plywood for strapped shields.
