| Loaner garb (tabards) and loaner weapons. Loaner stuff should be restricted to a few types. They should also be somewhat crappy and/or embarrassing to use so that any newbs wanting to stick around will want to make their own stuff. From the bel boards: - Quote :
- If loaner garb looks good then fighters have no reason to obtain their own, you've done it for them.
Our realm swords are pastel purple...an actual midieval color...but still embarrassing enough to make them build their own.
Exactly, if its good stuff, why will they invest in making anything themselves? They'll just leach. I've spent alot of time and money the past 2 years on Dag. I'm kinda burnt out. I still want to come out and fight and make weapons for myself, but I'm going to scale back. I'm really happy to see some of you are willing and able to step up for the realm and make loaners. But don't make 'em so good they don't want to make anything for themselves. Just get them interested and then get them to make their own stuff so we have loaners to get even more folks interested. Keep up the good work. Konradr Konradr

| -facepalm- My apologies you had to read that troll of a thread Konradr lmfao -shame-.
I agree entirely though. I'm really etchy on making loaner swords with Templar as I know quite a few of our veterans do not have their own passing kits yet, or have a sword that fails and would prefer to use a loaner than fix it. We will not have the new loaner swords being used for people who have a kit of their own but do not want to fix it.
We might be lenient and let some people use the loaners until they fix theirs (1 practice) but when fighters like Shadow or Mathan/Fourteen come out (Fourteen is just over 3 months, he's getting geared up) we want them to be able to have a weapon to use.
Last practice even with just 8 people on the field 3 of the swords everyone where using failed for tip twists but that was all we had. 6 of the people fighting are veterans who should have had their own stuff. (Nightmare excluded, he is having his bat fixed -ahem-TEMPLAR-ahem-)
I've considered ugly colors like Tan with big lettering down the side that says "LOANER". Still open to ideas.
I am still considering buying shield blanks to get loaner shields, but the same rule will apply, if you have been here longer than 3 months or 6 months you don't need to be using them as you should be able to get a shield made for under $15 or attend a build day.
Do we need to have another build day soon?
I'd really like some council input or support on the loaner weapon issues and getting our guys garbed up and weapons made for those who need them.

| Not saying Tan is an ugly color... just not as cool as plain black when you write "LOANER" down the side. | |

| i'm planning on making a bunch of tabbards out of our extra fabric and then kinda making them like jersy's write like loner on the back... so some symbol that still looks cool but we will know that it is a loner | |

| Just because we have nice loaners does not mean it would discourage our regular fighters from getting their own weapons. I used Konradr's loaner bow for a while. A nice bow. And never once thought not to get my own. In fact, it made me want to get one just like it.
And I don't understand what the issue is with people not having their own kits and using loaners instead. Some people can't afford their own kits. Some have no time to make them. Just because they have no money and no time, they should be limited to shitty weapons?
And what of those who's weapons fail at events? What will they use?
I feel like we should have nice loaners. Not just crappy ones for newbies.

| Ours will be as nice as we can make them, but as sturdy as possible (quarter inch pvc) so we don't have to remake them. They won't be as sleek as Taco's which are made out of fiberglass, but they will be something I'd wanna use.
I don't mind people using the loaners who do not have a weapon or have a weapon that fails but I don't want it to be a habitual thing where people don't bring their kit and end up using the loaners for months on end. I totally understand people not having money to make their own kit, this is why we have build days for them to make a weapon (preferably they contribute a few dollars to help pay for foam) but aside from that we should all have our own kits after being here 1+ years.
We definitely need to have a build day for our current fighters to make new swords and fix their old ones or donate them to loaners.
We still have tons of foam leftover from the past couple build days, I may throw out the non 1/2" stuff or label it for haftings only, but really all someone needs to do is bring a core (pvc or fiberglass) to a build day and a "can do" attitude and you'll leave with a weapon. I promise.

| I think we need to have a BYOC, bring your own core, build day. Knubbs, Smithy, and I all know how cheap you can get Valora for since we provided tons of it to the last build day at Heretic's, $30 at Galaxy foam can easily make 8 swords? Plus some blue foam for $5 which is pretty much a single blue right there. A couple of us can chip in to get foam for those who need to build/repair. If you don't have a core you can donate a can of DAP or a couple rolls of cloth tape and you can make a sword or two? This is just so we don't have what has happened at the last 2 builds..... 2-3 people come, build weapons out of everyone's materials... and we never see them again. | |

| A $5 roll of Walmart Blue will make several loaner blues, not just one. For loaners all you really need is blue.
A can of DAP is alot more expensive than any core. Two fiberglass driveway markers from Lowe's would be about $4. One Dark Gray PVC core (the thickest kind found in the sprinkler 'riser' section) would cost about $2-3 depending on size. DAP cost about $7 at Walmart. You could also use Double Sided Duct tape for simple, and quick loaner sword making. If anything, at least for a decent grip with DS tape and rope. A pair of children's stockings from Walmart, enough to cover a blue, is $2. But they also carry them at some .99 cent stores for..... yeah, .99 cents.

| I think Templar and I will use double sided duct tape for the loaners, Caretaker made a really nice blue sword out of double sided duct and it turned out really nice, not too heavy, and sturdy as hell. And with DS tape we can also do it all in our livingroom while watching 300 or Troy to get in the mood... without smelling up the house.
For the BYOC build day I don't really care what people bring to the build day, as long as if you plan to leave with a weapon you contribute something like a core. I am sure I can rally with a couple people to get $5 or $10 donations to get enough foam to cover the group so everyone in our realm can build something.
We need a build day like that 10+ hour build that we had at Knubb's place :3 that was nice and the weather is getting perfect for a nice day of building.
Smithy depending on what schoolwork I get done today and tomorrow I might come by and build with ya.

| Couple questions.
Does anyone here know what evalite foam is and if it can be obtained in town? If so, where? I also heard through the grapevine that there is a warehouse/shop in town that also sells bandshoppe poles? Can anyone here give me an idea of where that is as well?

| Do a search of our forum for 'bandshoppe' and you will find the topic with the link as originally posted by Kilanos. The wharehouse is in North Las Vegas. I forget the name, but I gave the address to Templar. They sell 5', 6.5' and 7' bandshoppe poles.
Evalite is the foam they use in those interconnecting floor mats. Look in the flooring department and look for the bag of gray interlocking floor mats. You can get them at Home depot or Lowes. Places like Walmart might have them as well, the colored interlocking floor mats used to make kiddy floors a playground.

| The first time I looked for it, I couldn't find it either. I've seen it recently at both Lowes, Home depot and Walmart. It's the interlocking floormat. It's usually in a zippered plastic bag like they put comforters in. Evalite is what its made of, or 'EVA' but that's not what its called. Somewhere on the label it will say 100% EVA or something like that. Kinda like these: http://www.allmats.com/site/439205/page/287215http://www.softtiles.com/Here it is: Print that out and take it with you. Konradr | |

| Don't use those foam pads on weapons. Although its EVA foam its a different set of properties then the EVAlite. Best use for that foam is coreless shield support.
Best place to get Weapon Foam is Galaxy Foam. Ask for EVAlite (Velora) @ 1/2" thick and have them cut it into 1.5" strips. I believe the avg cost is $12 a yard.
I usually go and get 3 or 4 yards and it lasts a while.

| Some folks use that foam for the core or 'box' layer of the weapon, then finish the last two layers with velora or blue foam.
I would not make a weapon completely with that foam. I think its too dense and would make the weapon hit too hard.
I am sure phoxly had read on the bel boards that this foam is for the box layer of a weapon and not the striking surfaces.
